What to bring to Comic-Con '09

I was perusing through the TRS forums and I came across a fellow TRSer who was asking for advice on what to bring to Comic-Con '09. Here's what I had to say: (Note: this will be more updated as I will add more things as I go along and remember certain things)

I've been going to the Con for about 10-11 years or so and here's what I suggest:

Things to bring:

  • Backpack , preferably one with lots of pockets (inventory +5)
  • Water or beverage of choice (I believe alcohol is prohibited)
    • Energy drinks are popular and helpful
  • Comfy, walking shoes (your dogs'll be barking at EotD)
  • Camera (slim, pocket sized ones are recommended for easy access)
  • Portable video game device (you'll be waiting in a lot of lines)
    • If video games aren't your thing, try books, origami, knitting utensils
  • Cell phone charger
    • Just in case you forget to charge your phone or are a twitter freak like me, there are outlets in the rest areas by the artist alleys
  • Things you want signed at the Con from celebs and ceWEBrities.
  • Nose plug (there are some people with bad B.O., f'reals!)

Garb you should grab:

  • Free big bag
    • Warner Bros aka WB bag (cool art, biggest bag, inventory +10)
    • Sci-fi bag (my personal favorite, sturdy, doesn't drag on floor)
    • NBC bag (just like Sci-fi, but doesn't have the word Frakkin')
    • Viz Video bag (check booth for more info, wonderful tote!)
  • Free t-shirts / accessories (armor +1, money +10, giveaway garb FTW)
    • Street Fighter head band wins my fave accessory award
  • Unique freebies (rare drops to whoo/envy your friends)
    • USB thumbies dropped: Iron Man, Project Abraham, Eagle Eye, etc.
    • Masks dropped: Storm Trooper of Star Wars: FU and Strangers movie

Other misc facts/advice:

! Keep everything in your big bag and/or backpack. I made this mistake once where I placed two bags down, took some pictures with Starfox/furries/Firefox chars and left one of my bags. When I came back for it, it had already been stolen. Thieves FTMFL :(

* Paramount booth gives out cool stuff on an hourly/random basis, but crowds are malicious and greedy. Some guy in front of me just kept on grabbing Iron Man USBs over and over again. Talk about no Comic Con etiquette! On a side note, only the dedicated/lucky get shirts.

* Crowds for Hall H start lining up Friday night just to get in Saturday morning. Elite security say they strictly enforce cutters, but when a group cut in front of us, they didn't do anything but come over, talked a bit and left.

Overall, the San Diego Comic-Con is a great experience, but I feel as if I only go for the panels (Yes, I went to the TRS panel of course) now as I get to rest and not deal with the large crowds down on the floor. (But I doubt I'd go if they moved it to Las Vegas!) It feels great to geek out on anime, Star Wars, movies, tv shows, panels, oh and something the Con has kinda forgotten, comic books!
